The Leukaemia Foundation offers a range of personalised and practical support services for patients and families living with leukaemias, lymphomas, myeloma and related blood disorders. It also funds medical research to find less invasive treatment options and ultimately cures for those living with these diseases.
Being diagnosed with one of these life threatening diseases turns a patient’s life upside down overnight and has an enormous impact, not only physically but emotionally, mentally and financially on the whole family.
This is particularly true for rural and regional families who are forced to move immediately to Brisbane or Townsville to begin treatment which can last for a year or more.
To ease the burden on patients and their families, the Leukaemia Foundation offers, free-of-charge, purpose built accommodation centres close to hospitals/treatment centres, transport and financial assistance. Patients are also offered emotional support through one-on-one counselling, hospital and home visits, practical advice and referrals to specialist services. The Foundation’s support services team also offers educational programs and support groups for patients, families and carers.
A highly trained professional team of support services staff, including counsellors, oncology nurses and allied health professionals are available to offer help throughout the journey from diagnosis, to treatment and recovery.
